Penile prosthesis

There are many types of penile prostheses. To make it easier to remember and understand, in this chapter, we will simply divide the types of penile prostheses into nonhydraulic and hydraulic penile prostheses. Each type is divided into groups according to the characteristics of the penile prosthesis.

Nonhydraulic penile prosthesis

This type of penile prosthesis does not have a complicated mechanism, so there are not many problems with mechanical failure. However, the disadvantage is that it is not natural and difficult to hide. It cannot be expanded as desired.

Hydraulic penile prosthesis

Hydraulic penile prosthesis refers to the type that can pump fluid from the reservoir into the penile prosthesis when the penis is erect and can be pumped out to make it flaccid when sexual intercourse is not desired. This allows for good hiding and expansion when erect. In addition, some new models can increase the length of the penis when erect. Hydraulic penile prostheses can be divided according to the number of pieces of equipment.

Patients who are suitable for penile prosthesis implantation include patients with ED caused by physical illnesses and those who have not received good treatment results from other simple methods. Patients whose cause is due to mental illness should receive penile prosthesis implantation only when other methods have not been successful and have been advised by a psychiatrist to undergo surgery. Currently, doctors prefer to use almost all types of hydraulic devices because they provide a more natural feeling. The advantages and disadvantages of each type of device must be explained to the patient. In addition, the disability of some patients, especially in terms of hand use, must be considered because some models of penile prosthesis pumping and releasing fluid back are difficult for patients with hand disabilities. Or, the patient's partner may need to be discussed to see if they are willing to help the patient make the penis erect and flaccid.
